Kieler Woche is an annual sailing event held in Kiel on the Baltic coast of Germany. Designing the promotional poster for the annual sailing regatta developed into one of the most prestigious European design competitions since its inception in 1948. Since 1959 only five designers have been invited each year to take part in the competition. The brief has remained unchanged for 60 years, and offers a unique survey of the development of European graphics. This 1964 design by renowned German designer Hans Hillmann is widely considered to be the greatest through the competitions history.
