Banksy’s 2011 "Stained Glass "was not designed for the street. But like the ephemeral light of stained glass windows it was intended for mass public consumption. Illuminated glass, having originated in medieval Europe adorning the inside of Gothic churches, was the original moving image media. It displayed a Biblical narrative in coloured glass that came alive with the addition of the rays of the sun. Banksy’s "Stained Glass"replaces the illuminating light of day with the power of mass collaboration and creativity. The artist enlisted the help of a state school in Los Angeles, asking the students to scrawl their own unique tags, designs, and messages on a series of panels placed in their school playing area. The result was a swirling mix of communication and commemoration.
