Mark Rothko moved through several artistic styles in his career before arriving at his signature colour focussed style in 1950. A prominent figure in the New York school (also known as Abstract Expressionism), Rothko used abstract means to express emotions as rectangular fields of colour.
In 1978, the Guggenheim Museum organised a major retrospective, Mark Rothko 1903-1970.
